The Play That Goes Wrong

One of the West End’s current hits is the Mischief Theatre’s The Play That Goes Wrong, which entertains audiences at the Duchess Theatre. Having opened in September 2014, the show has already proven popular enough to extend its stay at the venue so audiences can pick up theatre tickets and witness the production throughout the year.

Following the hilariously failed attempts of a drama society to put on an Edinburgh Festival production, the show boasts a talented cast working under the direction of Mark Bell. They include the play’s writers Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields, plus the likes of Rob Falconer, Dave Hearn, Charlie Russell, Greg Tannahill and Nancy Wallinger.

The mentioned drama society is the Cornley Polytechnic and like everyone else in Edinburgh during the annual fringe festival they want to enjoy big success with a production that will wow audiences. Their plan is to stage a 1920s style murder mystery play but it becomes clear that this show is not going to ahead without a hitch. Chris, the head of the society, is both directing and playing the inspector, something that is ill advised, and this isn’t the only problem; the duo playing the show’s couple has trouble with romantic scenes as one of them is genuinely pining for the other. Anything that can go wrong will.

The Mischief Theatre is an acclaimed group that has presented shows around the country, including their popular Lights! Camera! Improvise! With The Play That Goes Wrong, however, they have become an exciting group to keep an eye on in the West End.

The popularity of The Play That Goes Wrong means that it will be talked-about alongside other West End hits like The 39 Steps and Ghost Stories as the year progresses as it continues its run at the London Palladium.
