Synopsis

The Noel Coward Theatre in London’s West End welcomes this revival of Martin McDonagh’s The Lieutenant Of Inishmore, which welcomes an acclaimed cast and creative team in 2018.

The play is one of the best known from Irish writer McDonagh, whose work has earned him widespread praise over the last few decades, both for his stage productions and his feature films, and it is certain to attract an eager crowd of theatregoers to the capital.

And then there’s the director. Michael Grandage calls the shots when the production heads to the West End, meaning that he tackles another part of McDonagh’s unfinished Aran Islands trilogy. Another part of the series – The Cripple Of Inishmaan – was directed by Grandage at the Noel Coward Theatre in 2013 when Daniel Radcliffe took on a lead role.

So to call the darkly comic The Lieutenant Of Inishmore a must-see would be an understatement and this is before we even get to the identity of the show’s lead star, who takes the form of Poldark’s Aiden Turner.

Turner takes on the role of Padraic in the production, which means he plays member of the INLA, a splinter group of the IRA in early 1990s Ireland. He is a violent man with memorable methods and we will witness his dark side when he returns to the island if Inishmore following the death of his cat.

It has earned many fans since it was first staged in 2001 but now The Lieutenant Of Inishmore can be experienced by the latest generation of theatregoers as it plays at the West End’s Noel Coward Theatre.
