The Ferryman

Gielgud Theatre

Synopsis

The Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End is the home of Jez Butterworth’s The Ferryman, which runs in Theatreland following its acclaimed appearance at the Royal Court Theatre. The production was already one of the biggest shows of last year, coming from a writer whose work has been celebrated around the world, and now it continues to attract theatregoers in 2018.

Meanwhile, stage and screen director Sam Mendes, best known for the Bond films Skyfall and Spectre, plus the West End’s Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, takes on directing duties, making this an unmissable event.

The Ferryman relocates London audiences to Derry in the early 1980s and introduces to the characters that make up the Carney family, Quinn (Owen McDonnell), Caitlin (Rosalie Craig) and Mary (Cathering McCormack). Their farm has been the scene of hard work and planning in advance of the annual harvest celebrations, but this year’s festivities are going to take an unexpected turn.

McDonnell, Craig and McCormack appear as part of a cast that also includes Dean Asthon, Declan Conlon, Kevin Creedon, Charles Dale, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Terence Keeley, Laurie Kynaston, Mark Lambert, Stella McCusker, Francsis Mezza and Glenn Speers

Jez Butterworth’s best known play is undoubtedly the smash hit Jerusalem, which appeared at the Royal Court Theatre and in the West End on numerous occasions since 2008, winning awards and bagging a Tony Award upon its trip across the Atlantic. The Ferryman is his latest opportunity to cement his status as one of the country’s most exciting playwrights.

The Ferryman runs at the Gielgud Theatre.
