The Birthday Party

Harold Pinter Theatre

production closed

The latest show headed to the Harold Pinter Theatre is a revival of a play from the venue’s namesake. The Birthday Party, Pinter’s 1958 dark comedy, is set to appear at the West End venue with some big names in lead roles and behind the scenes.

The venue has been known as the Harold Pinter Theatre since it was renamed in 2011 (prior to that it was the Comedy Theatre) and it is a testament to the effect of Pinter’s work that he now has a location named for him in one of the world’s capitals of theatre. So it is only fitting that the venue houses this revival in the show’s 60th anniversary year.

Those mentioned top names will come in handy for such a momentous occasion, with acclaimed actors Toby Jones, Stephen Mangan and Zoë Wanamaker stepping into some popular roles. Ian Rickson directs them in a story that transports audiences to a slow moving boarding house by the sea.

This boarding house is run by Meg and Petey Boles (the former played by Wanamaker), whilst the only guest there is Stanley (Jones). Stanley’s birthday is the stimulus for the titular party and it is there that their slow and comfortable lives are interrupted and turned upside-down. Strangers, including Mangan’s Goldberg, arrive on the scene and upset the status quo forever.

As a must-see theatrical event, The Birthday Party is bound to attract a lot of attention and as it plays at the Harold Pinter Theatre it is a wonderful opportunity to witness one of Pinter’s classics in the perfect location.

The Birthday Party runs at the Harold Pinter Theatre in 2018.
