Synopsis

The West End regularly welcomes some well known Hollywood names to the stage and in previous years these have ranged from Josh Hartnett and Keira Knightley to Kevin Spacey and Kristen Scott Thomas. This time around it is the turn of Thandie Newton to step into the West End spotlight as she lands a role in “Death and the Maiden” at the Harold Pinter Theatre (formerly the Comedy Theatre). The actress will take on the role that was originally inhabited by Juliet Stevenson when the play premiered at the Royal Court Theatre two decades ago.

Newton has appeared in a wide range of movies and also made her way into some well known television shows as well. She has appeared alongside Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible II”, Don Cheadle in “Crash”, Vin Diesel in “The Chronicles of Riddick”, Will Smith in “The Pursuit of Happyness” and Simon Pegg in “Run, Fatboy, Run” and as a result she provides recognisable for London theatre audiences when they pick up theatre tickets for this production.

The plot, from writer Ariel Dorfman, focuses on the character of Paulina (Newton), who is a former political prisoner, whose memories of her captor revolve only around his voice and mannerisms, having never seen his face. Now the old regime has crumbled and a democratic one is rising in its place and she is forced to be judge and jury with the man she believes is responsible for her past.

“Death and the Maiden” begins its run at the Harold Pinter Theatre on Monday 24th October 2011 (with previews from Thursday 13th October 2011) and continues to Saturday 21st January 2012.
