Synopsis

In 2009 audiences at the Royal Court Theatre witnessed “Jerusalem” starring Mark Rylance and Mackenzie Crook and this show would go on to become one of the most talked-about plays of 2009 and 2010. The show would receive an array of admirers and numerous Laurence Olivier Award nominations and then transferred to the West End for a run at the Apollo Theatre in 2010. Now, after a successful run on Broadway, the show is set to return to the same venue in the West End in 2011 with both Rylance and Crook returning to their respective roles and a sizable audience likely to greet them.

The unique tale told in the play from Jezz Butterworth focuses on the character of Johnny Byron, a local waster and a man who is wanted by people in all quarters of the community. First of all there are crooks that want to beat him to a pulp, then there’s the local council that wants to evict him from his home (relocating him behind bars if the police have their way), there’s friends that want to pump him full of alcohol and his kids, who simply want him to take them to the annual St George’s Day fair.

The show is likely to a talked-about production once again when theatre tickets go on sale at the Apollo Theatre, with Mark Rylance returning on the back of a career that includes “La Bete” at the Comedy Theatre in 2010 an “Endgame” at the Duchess Theatre in 2009. Then there’s Mackenzie Crook, best known as Gareth in “The Office”.

“Jerusalem” is at the Apollo Theatre from Saturday 8th October 2011 to Saturday 14th January 2012.
