Top Girls
Trafalgar Studios
Synopsis
In 1982 Max Stafford-Clark directed “Top Girls” by Caryl Churchill at the Royal Court Theatre and this year he comes full circle by bringing a new production of the play to Chichester’s Minerva Theatre. This time around he is directing a cast that includes Suranne Jones from “Coronation Street” - plus Lucy Briers, Laura Elphinstone, Stella Gonet, Lisa Kerr, Catherine McCormack and Olivia Poulet – and this production is set to transfer to Trafalgar Studios 1 from mid-August. It means that it follows in the footsteps of other Chichester productions like “Yes, Prime Minister” and “Enron”, among others, to make their way to the West End.
Stafford-Clark has directed a wide variety of productions during his career, from his work as the Associate Director of the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh to his work with the Out of Joint touring company (which he founded with Sonia Friedman). His credits include productions for the National Theatre such as “Hinterland” in 2002, “She Stoops to Conquer” in 2002, “The Permanent Way” in 2003 and “The Overwhelming” in 2006, in addition to “Talking to Terrorists” at the Royal Court and “A Dish of Tea with Dr Johnson” at the Arts Theatre in 2011.
With “Top Girls” he presents a show that deals with the memorable evening thrown by Jones’s character Marlene. She is a hard-nosed businesswoman who works for the Top Girls Employment Agency and she has recently been granted a promotion and as a result she throws a dinner party, inviting some of the most powerful women in history in the process. But with so many big personalities at the table the evening can only lead to some unforgettable situations.
Whilst Suranne Jones has previously appeared in “Coronation Street” and, as of a guest-role this year, “Doctor Who”, her co-star Catherine McCormack has also amassed a range of credits – both on the stage and screen. Her stage roles include “The 39 Steps” at the Criterion Theatre in 2006 and “All My Sons” at the National Theatre in 2000, whilst her film credits include “Braveheart” and “28 Weeks Later”.
London theatre audiences will have their chance to witness “Top Girls” when it runs at Trafalgar Studios 1 from Tuesday 16th August 2011 (with previews from Friday 5th August 2011) until Saturday 15th October 2011.
