Synopsis

Most people are familiar with the movie “Driving Miss Daisy” which starred Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy, but what many might not have realised is that it is based on a 1987 play by Alfred Uhry. Well West End audiences are going to have an opportunity to compare the two versions in 2011 as the successful Broadway production of the show makes its way to the capital with James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave in the lead roles. So not only will audiences get a renowned story when they arrive at the Wyndham’s Theatre, they will also witness the work of two acclaimed actors.

In “Driving Miss Daisy” the Daisy of the title refers to Miss Daisy Werthan, an elderly Jewish woman from the Southern regions of America, and the one doing the driver is her chauffeur Hoke Colburn. We witness their interactions over a defined period and through these we are able to get unique insights into Daisy’s worldview and her life.

The show originated on the stage of the John Golden Theatre last year and continued until April 2011. With some high profile names attached to the project it was always going to find a crowd with ease and after that a West End transfer was almost inevitable. What was not inevitable, however, was the cast making the transfer as well and this means that those with theatre tickets have an unbeatable opportunity to see two acclaimed actors in the play.

James Earl Jones was last seen in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” in the West End in 2009, whilst Redgrave has previously appeared in a wealth of shows in the capital.

“Driving Miss Daisy” is at the Wyndham’s Theatre from Monday 26th September 2011 until Saturday 17th December 2011.
