Lady Windermere's Fan

Vaudeville Theatre

production closed

The latest season of shows headed to the Vaudeville Theatre celebrates one of the world’s most celebrated writers, Oscar Wilde, whose work continues to have a profound effect on audiences around the globe. The Irish playwright penned many well known plays and this new season includes four of them, with Lady Windermere’s Fan the second of them when it opens in January.

The production will be directed by Kathy Burke and she tackles a story with many twists and turns. It focuses on the eponymous Windermere during her birthday party when the arrival of Mrs Erlynne causes great distress. Lady Windermere had recently confronted her husband about his alleged affair with the woman and his decision to invite her to the ball only adds to the drama. She soon leaves her husband, but this is not the end of the story as further twists and revelations take it to its dramatic conclusion.

First seen in London in 1892 its return in 2017 shows that this is a play that still commands a large audience more than a century since it first emerged. Like many of Wilde’s play it has legions of fans and it has been adapted on numerous occasions during the 20th century, whilst also enjoyed a musical adaptation by Noël Coward called After The Ball.

And with the acclaimed Kathy Burke directing this is sure to attract a lot of attention. Not only is she the director of London shows like Love Me Tonight at the Hampstead Theatre and Smaller at the Lyric Theatre, she is also known as a successful television comedy performer from shows like Harry Enfield’s Television Programme, amongst many others.

She directs Lady Windermere’s Fan when it plays at the Vaudeville Theatre from Vaudeville Theatre on Friday 12th January 2018.
