Debbie Reynolds - Apollo Theatre
Debbie Reynolds is alive and fabulous, at least according to the title
of her new show, which will be showering audience members with glitz and
glamour as it lands on the stage of the Apollo Theatre in 2010. It is
likely to be a compelling show for fans of the star who enjoyed great
success in Tinseltown back in the 1950s, and an interesting look into
the world of celebrity for those uninitiated.
The icon of the silver screen will be performing ten dates of the
stellar show at the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue from April and
with such a short space of time those ten dates will be unmissable
events.
Reynolds needs no introduction, having entertained audiences around the
world for generations. She is an icon of a by-gone era of cinema, when
the customs and practices of the Hollywood studio system were much
different to those today. Back in the 1950s it was not uncommon for
actors, actresses and behind-the-scenes talent to be tied to a
particular studio for all of their movies and in Debbie Reynolds case,
this was MGM, for whom she appeared in movies likes “Singin’ in the
Rain”, “That’s Entertainment”, “How the West was Won”, “Bundle of Joy”
and “The Unsinkable Molly Brown”. More recently she was also seen in the
Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston vehicle “The Bodyguard” and returned
to our hearts in the phenomenally successful sitcom “Will & Grace”.
It has been an eventful career with many highs and lows, with “Debbie
Reynolds: Alive and Fabulous” promising to be a trip down memory lane
for the star. Audiences at the Apollo will witness her account of a life
under studio lights, with genuine MGM footage filling in the gaps and
supporting her story, whilst Reynolds sings, dances and impersonates
some well known names from the world of entertainment.
It will be a captivating show if a look at her past credits is anything
to go by. As well as starring alongside the likes of Gene Kelly, Fred
Astaire, Leslie Nielson and her then-husband Eddie Fisher, she has also
been honoured with numerous awards. For her career she has been awarded
with Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations and wins at the National
Board of Review Awards and an American Comedy Award for Lifetime
Achievement.
Entertaining large numbers of people is something that runs in the
family, with Reynolds own daughter following her into the movie
industry. Carrie Fisher is best known to audiences worldwide for her
role as Princess Leia in the hit series of “Star Wars” movies in the
late 1970s/early 1980s.
“Debbie Reynolds: Alive and Fabulous” makes its triumphant appearance on
the stage of the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue from Wednesday
28th April 2010 to Sunday 9th May 2010.
